The Annual George Ryga Award For Social Awareness In Literature

Sponsored by the George Ryga Society, BC Book World, CBC Radio (Kelowna) and Okanagan University College, this literary prize is granted to a B.C. writer who has achieved an outstanding degree of social awareness in a new book published in the preceding calendar year. The winner of the George Ryga Prize receives a commemorative bust of George Ryga, plus $2500 of advertising for the winning book. Deadline for submissions is April 1st. The award finalists are usually announced on George Ryga’s Birthday, July 27th, and the finalist announced at a celebration during George Ryga Week, the first week in November.

Criteria:

1. Social Awareness: In keeping with Alberta-born George Ryga’s status as a marginalized Ukranian Canadian who was deeply concerned with justice, the judges will select an outstanding work of both literary and social value that opens up discussion of social and cultural issues.
2. B.C. Writer: A writer who has lived in B.C. for three of the last five years.
3. Book Eligibility: A full-length book (40 pages at least; not a chapbook) published in the preceding calendar year.
4. Entry Fee: There are no entry fees, or forms. Send 4 (four) copies of the book for adjudication to:
